Dr. Rod Goodman

Cognitive Systems

Overview

Research focused on discovering the reasons for consciousness in higher mammals and why biology evolved this system for controlling complex organisms.

Goal

To use these principles for guiding the architecture of Adaptive Learning Robot Controllers.

Milestone

In 2001, Dr. Goodman, along with Christof Koch, David Chalmers, and Owen Holland, organized the first-ever conference on Machine Consciousness at the Banbury Center of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, bringing together biologists, engineers, ethicists, and philosophers to discuss the question, "Can a Machine be Conscious?"
